House photographs taken by children

Outcomes

Students were very much interested to take photographs using mobile phones. They took the pictures of all the houses near school. After taking pictures, they also went and enquired to the people in the house on – when it was built, when they came here, where were they before coming here, why they came here, after coming here did they make any kind of changes within the house. Some students also took pictures of flowers and said that they studied about that in the lesson ‘valley of flowers.’

Preparation of ideas

Activity was started by the discussion of houses with children.

Everybody is living in a house. There are different types of houses. Teacher asked them the kind of houses they are living. Students responded by listing out brick houses, sheet houses and mud houses. Then teacher asked the names of rooms inside the houses, for which, the responses were bathroom, bedroom, hall and kitchen. A few students were mentioning that they do not have bathrooms in their home, they will go out instead. Some were mentioning that they shall be using common bathrooms and toilets present outside their houses. Discussion paved way for understanding students’ socio-economical background as well. After that students were taken out to interact with local people and also take pictures of the houses.

Follow up

Photography exhibition was organized in school. Students’ pictures were hanged and people from the nearby community visited the school to see. Teacher said that it was a good experience altogether.
