It is my passion. It is a teacher who creates all other professionals. The role of a teacher in society is incomparable to all other professions. Teacher is a social engineer. She/he is responsible for all the changes in the society. I’m proud to work with young minds as they are going to be the trend setters of our country.
This profession helps us to update our knowledge as there is constant opportunity to learn. When I teach I become one with the children. Even if they go to higher classes we have the chance to be with the younger generation. It is an opportunity to see how my children have developed over the years into mature adults. This helps me understand the behavioral changes between generations of children especially their levels of maturity. I feel as if I’m young at heart all the time. I learn a lot from children, on how to handle a situation. Children who come to my class have work experience as they work and study to balance their life. It makes me wonder how they balance their work and study.
My views on children and learning:
I love children and I wanted to make some behavioral changes in children and how they should behave in the society. I don’t like to force the children to memorize and study. Because, I don’t remember what I memorized in my school days. There are certain aspects that need memorization, like tables. If anything has to be enjoyed then we have to make the children enjoy what they learn as this will be more effective in later years. I want life oriented education for children. If education was closely related to their environment it will be useful to them. We fail to teach basic things like behavioral aspects related to society. We concentrate on exams and marks. Along with lessons we should teach them life oriented skills.
How I teach:
As far as primary is concerned, I like standing time table as I am able to make changes in children as I have them with me for almost a year and able to spend quality time with them. I become one with the children and we read together and enjoy learning. I have a strong belief that all children aren’t equal. So my methodology changes according to the children. I mentally classify the children and give tasks accordingly. When there are children in class who attempt all the 5 questions with success and another 5 who are able to attend only 2 with success I don’t show any difference by putting low marks. I treat them all equally and give them uniform marks. This is only to encourage the slow learners and raise their confidence levels and motivate them. I use a lot of TLMs in class to help them get a deeper understanding on their lessons and attract all kinds of learners.
My goals for this year:
Writing 5E lesson plans for all my lessons as per CBSE norms, as it is aligned with behavioral changes in children and I am tuned to that. I like and admire NCF’s stance on children’s learning, work and education as it talks about overall development of a child. My teaching methodology has changed because of this.
This year, I want to do what all I can do to develop their reading skills, to widen their knowledge to a great extent and not think of them as mere primary children. This I can do by taking them on field trips and use technology in class instead of depending too heavily on books. I want to make changes in class as wish, like lot of teaching aids to bring variety to my class and thereby improve their learning. I want to use resources wherever book learning is not possible. If is about ‘space’ I would want to show videos that will help them visualize.
List of workshops and trainings attended:
Workshop on Inclusive Education on various topics
Reflections from workshops, trainings attended, readings etc:
After a training I normally find a change in my class. I participate in all trainings and workshops with interest as I like learning from others. One example was the CCE workshop which changed the way I assessed my students.
